Hol Art Books
is a new publisher dedicated to
great writing on visual art.

From theory to fiction, we publish and promote books that are enjoyable, engaging, and enlightening reading. We are now in the process of putting together seed teams to publish our first books, for release in the fall of 2009. We will publish original works, reprints and new editions of older titles, and new translations of foreign language works—all in simultaneous paperback, hardcover and ebook formats whenever possible.

Unique in the industry, we are building an internet-enabled publishing system that will allow anyone to suggest titles, form professional-level publishing groups, peer review one another's work, and collaboratively develop their title to ultimately be published as a Hol book. No matter how it's published, a successful book is first and foremost the result of passionate and talented individuals that come together to make it happen. With an open, networked publishing system, our aim is to build the best possible team for every book by giving everyone involved the freedom to choose their own project and a stake in that project's success.

This website is a working prototype for Hol Art Books. It seeks an answer to the question, What is Hol? by putting the publishing concepts developed so far into practice with enterprising project teams and booksellers.

Business Plan

Even as we begin the work of publishing books, we are also developing the publishing business that will support those books. Read a brief summary of what we're working on now, the in-progress draft of our business plan, or more the informal, on-the-fly updates from our blog.

Hol Archive

First launched in May of 2007, this site is now in its second major iteration. The first was focused on exploring and defining the larger principles of our publishing house and the functioning of our unique, networked publishing system. Those original pages can be found in our archive.
