What We're Working on Now

Hol Art Books is a startup publisher. We are now in the process of putting together seed teams to work on publishing our very first books, for release in the fall of 2009.

We're working side-by-side with our teams
Ultimately, many of the first steps of publishing with us (submitting a project, building a team, writing a proposal, submitting for peer review) will be much more self-serve. For these first books, however, we'll be developing the processes, checklists, schedules, and contracts as we go. So, along with working on their own books, our original teams will also serve as the foundation for Hol's own development. They are vital participants in what will hopefully prove to be a dynamic and meaningful long-term venture for everyone.

We're touring bookstores and building relationships
We believe that building direct relationships with the booksellers that put our teams' books in the hands of readers will ultimately lead to deeper and more meaningful sales coverage than we would get with a national distributor. Having booksellers specifically involved with each of our project teams is the beginning of these relationships. Building from these networks, we'll also be going city-by-city and scouting the stores, visiting the museums and building an understanding of the city itself. All so that that we can ultimately bring the right books to the right places.

We're developing the brand and the bibliography
What you see on the site now is only a prototype for our future. In the coming year, we'll be working with designers on a graphic identity for Hol, which will include our main website, our book catalogue, and a set of standards for the team books. We also have a vision for a resource that we call The Hol List: the über card catalog of great writing on art, that's starting in its infancy now. There are a number of larger efforts to catalog books online (Google Book Search, Microsoft Live Search, Open Library, the Really Modern Library) and we believe the books we publish and promote can be a vital, niche part of those efforts.
